Q & A

I participate in trail running, cycling, hiking, backpacking and cross-country skiing. Last year, I did my first sprint triathlon and first trail running race, and this year, I am training for a half Ironman in Calgary. It became apparent quite quickly while training last year that my right hip was significantly weaker than my left hip, contributing to pain in my right lower extremity. I had to slow down my running training for two months while I focused on strengthening my right hip, and then I could progress to longer distances.

Having seen first-hand the importance of strength training to running, I strongly emphasize strength and endurance exercises in my physiotherapy approach. The type of exercises and difficulty will differ but the focus remains the same.
I love the puzzle that each patient represents. We have tools, tests and different skills that assist us in trying to solve that puzzle. It’s very rewarding when, in conjunction with a good home exercise program, we’re successful and able to resolve a patient’s main area of concern. I also really enjoy the professional relationships that we’re able to build with all our patients. I love getting to know each patient and often their family members, friends and/or neighbours when they get referred to us.

I work with a great team. Going to work every day is such a delight due to all the lovely people I work with. Physiotherapy is also an ever-growing and ever-changing discipline. There is forever more learning to do and more courses to take. It keeps my brain engaged and makes every day a little different. Just ask Albert – he’s been working for years and still finds courses to take!
I enjoy seeing patients of any activity level and age. I have treated many runners, and my background in trail running and triathlon helps me understand the demands of training and the role of physiotherapy in preventing and treating injuries.
My commitment to professional growth is evident in my pursuit of advanced clinical skills, and I have successfully completed my Orthopedic Division Level 2 Upper and Lower Quadrants. These courses, designed to enhance clinical skills in treating musculoskeletal conditions, have already proven invaluable in advancing my practice.

I participate in small group mentorship every 1-2 months to practice hands-on skills and discuss complex clinical cases. I often ask my colleagues for their opinions or draw from their past experiences for different cases. Something our clinic excels at is working as a team and co-treating patients when required. We all have different skill sets; sometimes, the team is more effective than a single practitioner. We are also fortunate to have Ty Henry as our massage therapist and work closely with him with many patients.
